The South and Centre - Full Day excursion

A ‘must’ for every mauritius-travaller. Most highlights in one day: Floreal, crater of Trou aux Cerfs, Village Garden, Curepipe, Mare aux Vacoas, holy lake Grand Bassin, Black River Gorge, Chamarel (seven-colored earth), view point Le Morne, Casela bird park.

The south is rough and undeveloped, the perfect antidote to the tourist resorts of the north. Here the beautiful scenery is what counts and you can even find some deserted sandy beaches.

One of the best places for a beach walk is from Pointe Aux Roches, where the unspoilt beach stretches for 5km to the east. But the lack of coral reefs in the area makes it dangerous to swim.

From Souillac, the largest settlement in the south, you can visit the Rochester Falls, Le Gris Gris (the southernmost tip of Mauritius, and very craggy) and La Roche qui Pleure – the Crying Rock. The south coast of Mauritius has been largely untouched by the changes of time and the determined traveller seeking solitude will find plenty to enjoy here.

The north coast of Mauritius, with its twin beach resorts of Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches, is where most tourists head to enjoy the island’s white beaches and clear turquoise waters. Trou aux Biches is the quieter resort and with its 3km stretch of beach is ideal for beach–lovers.

Hotels here offer windsurfing, waterskiing, sailing, diving and snorkelling, as well as trips in glass–bottomed boats. On the beach you can buy freshly caught fish, amazingly carved pineapples and seashells from wandering locals.

Grand Baie is quite a bit larger, and quite a bit busier. It’s the only real resort town in Mauritius and there are plenty of places to eat and drink as well as several shopping complexes. Grand Baie also has its fair share of nightclubs offering everything from disco to live jazz. You can also go on day trips to the nearby islands of Flat Island, Gabriel Island and Coin de Mire.

Flat Island and Gabriel Island were once quarantine stations for immigrants during the cholera epidemic in 1856. These days, they are worth visiting just to walk along their untouched beaches and explore the coral reefs that ring them.
